Save the Date – December 5th, 2021! Congregation P’nai Tikvah presents an “Evening with Josh Goldberg.” A special Chanukah Musical performance for the benefit of Congregation P’nai Tikvah.

Josh Goldberg is a Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter, producer, and soon-to-be ordained Cantor, whose perspective on life, love, faith, and the world is reflected in his music as well as his personal endeavors. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Josh studied music from an early age and is an accomplished pianist, guitarist, and singer, traversing a variety of musical genres with equal dexterity. His musical influences which include Stevie Wonder, Josh Groban, Elton John, Gavin DeGraw, Steely Dan, Norah Jones, as well as the Cantorial masters of Chazzanut, are apparent in his music. His attachment to his Jewish roots led him to enter the realm of contemporary Jewish music, although he’s equally comfortable in the pop world.

In the Sukkah

Living in our sukkah for seven days forces us to confront the reality of our changing environment.
The sun pounds down on us and we search the sky for rain clouds for their shade and water.

The sukkah is fragile,
much like our planet,
much like our lives.
The branches let in starlight,
gentle breezes and
our ushpizin-
voices and faces from long ago
or just last year.

In the sukkah,
we wave the lulav,
inhale the fresh scent of the etrog.
We eat meals here, sleep here,
tell stories, rejuvenate.
Perhaps if we have lost some confidence in our foundation, our faith,
we can find it here-
drifting in with a gentle wind.

This year, we greet each other virtually in our sukkot.
Next year, hopefully,
we’ll rejoice with hugs and holding hands.
Let us remember that home is not
in these four walls,
but in the small voice inside that connects us all to the
Spirit of the Universe.

The Finished Sukkah, Inviting all to come and shake the Lulav!

Join us for Engaging Israel: Foundations for a New Relationship, an exploration of the significance of Israel for Jewish life.  Engaging Israel is a series of nine lectures and conversations with scholars from the Shalom Hartman Institute that responds to growing feelings of disenchantment and disinterest toward Israel among an ever-increasing number of Jews worldwide by creating a new narrative regarding the significance of Israel for Jewish life. Lecture and discussion participants include Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman, Dr. Tal Becker, Yossi Klein-Halevi, Rabbi Dr. Rachel Sabath Beit-Halachmi, Prof. Gil Troy and others.  This class will be taught online using the video modules followed by live, interactive group discussion.

L’Dor V’Dor –  Shema Video

In Shlomo Riskin’s article in the New York Jewish Week, August 1, 2018, “Teach Your Children Well”, he quotes Deuteronomy 11:19 “You shall teach them with your children, to speak with them, when you sit in your home, when you walk on the way, when you lie down, and when you arise.” This is where, as he says, “the necessity of conveying the faith foundation to the next generation.” Inspiring a passion for the Jewish faith and traditions as a parent is a hefty burden, yet generations of Jewish continuity lay testament to results of this parental task. L’Dor V’Dor, from generation to generation, we teach our children lovingly and as Riskin says, “to personally claim ownership of the Torah.”

The Shema is usually the first prayer we teach our children. Our congregation is blessed with and encourages exposure and influence to Torah and this small video shows how a small pre-Jewlicious Learner has sunk her teeth into learning the Shema.

Kol Nidre – by Reb Jamie Hyams

Kol Nidre – by Reb Jamie Hyams

Last week on Rosh haShanah, I commented on the idea “May we be inscribed for a good year.” I explored the idea that in the coming year there will be things over which we will have no control, and other things whose outcome we can affect through our actions.
